Fourth Preamedical Externnship Program was held from 23rd Dec2018 to 2nd Jan. 2019. This is a precious academic program of USA (NRI) premedical and medical students, held every year. This program is an initiative of Ekal Health Foundation for Rural India (EHFRI) and held every year at Ranchi with the support of Jharkhand Chapter of Arogya Foundation of India (AFI) and Ekal Arogya Prakalp (EAP).
EHFRI is a an organization, founded by NRIs of USA to support our health care activities. Dr. Veena Gandhi is the chairperson of the organization for last 4 years. Through this program, a group of willing USA (NRI) students come every year to Ranchi for ten days, under her leadership. APII (USA), played an active role in persuading the students. As a result, this year number of participating students were 19. Accompanying them, the volunteers were Dr. Yogendra patel (M.D., FACS) and Minaxiben Shah. Dr. Mohan Daptadar was the key person to arrange the tour at USA. The financial burden is born by the participants themselves.
They arrived by 23rd Dec. Their stay was arranged in Hotel Holyday Home. Inaugural ceremony was held on 23rd Dec. at Hotel City Palace, with the blessings of chief guest Dr. D.K.Singh (director, RIMS) and guest of honor DR. Vivek Kashyap (superintendent RIMS). Participants were welcomed and apprised of their working schedule. Academic programs were held in the departments of Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics and Community medicine at RIMS, and private hospitals namely Alam Nursing Home of Dr. M. Alam, Amrita family Hospital ( Ayurvedic) of Dr. Suresh Agarwal and Vivekanand Hospital of Dr. Satish Midha. Two evening classes were held almost daily by the learned faculties consisting of Dr. R.P.Srivastava(surgery), Dr.Rajmohan (eye), Dr. Om Prakash (dentistry), Dr. Minali (dermatology), Dr. Deepak Verma (stem cell therapy), Dr. Archana Kumari (Gyneac), Dr. Devesh (PSM) and Dr. Bhupendra Singh (medical ethics). Rural health program was held at Hullu village of Gola block and Arogya resource center at Shikherjee. Dr. veena Gandhi and Dr. Yogendra Patel were not only volunteers but also served as faculty too from time to time. Dr. Patel was invited to present a paper on “Necrotizing fasciitis” in the dept. of surgery. Minaxiben has played the role of guardian for all the participants.
The Valedictory function was held in the evening of 2nd Jan. 2019 at Gymkhana club. Swami Bhaveshanandji of Ram Krishna mission was Chief guest. Director, RIMS and superintendent RIMS were guest of honour. All samiti members, faculties, and some honorable citizens were invitees. Dr. Mritunjay was anchor. Sambhag samiti president Sri Vijay Rajgarhiji presided over the meeting and welcomed the gathering. Dr. Mukul Bhatia apprised the audience about health care activities of AFI.
Dr. Madhukar Bhatt (National president EAP and incharge of the program), while briefing the report of recently held PME program, expressed gratitude towards the team of AFI and EAP for making pains taking efforts to make the program a success. The senior members were thanked for arranging dinner/lunch in their honour. He wished that this program must continue, as this strengthens our endeavor at national level to make close ties of brotherhood between the two countries. He reminded the words of swami Vivekanand that for the sake of humanity, east and west must come together and expressed his feeling that PME program is a valuable instrument in this direction and at the top of all this program gives an opportunity to the young generation of NRIs to come closer to their roots.
Dr. Veena Gandhi graced the dais and highlighted the achievements of this PME program as well as held so far in past. All the participants as well as the two volunteers narrated one by one their nice experience. Certificate of participation were distributed to the students. The volunteers and the faculties were honoured with memento and shawl. The Swamiji in his speech inspired the audience in general and the students in particular to consider their services as worship to God, for example washing the wounds as bathing the diety, applying ointment is like applying Chandan and tablets as offering Prasad. Director RIMS requested Dr. Veena Gandhi to continue this activity every year.
